HELP--my 1969 firebird just overheated and....?

smoke came out under the hood but what im worried about is the back breaks were smoking and there was a loud clicking noise the engine was making. The back breaks felt like they were locking. what should i do? after the car cools down should i give it a test run. This is a new engine 455.
