Do you have any Collection Call horror stories? What was your situation?

When I received my first and only Debt Collector call, I freaked out. I had excellent credit, I paid all of my bills early and on time, I managed my credit cards, and budgeted my spending. I could not figure what had happened. Well, come to find out that the automatic debit I had set up to pay for my new laptop "errored-out" six months prior as the bank explained. No attempt was ever made to contact me and it was such a small amount that I never noticed. I explained the situation to the Debt Collector three days later and I was returned with rudeness, sarcasm, and apathy. I was told "we don't care about the reason. We're here to collect the money." I was told to pay an impossible amount or else. I was cussed and yelled at, lied to and belittled. Every time i call I get a different conflicting story. I want to know how many other good people are suffering and is there anything we can do collectively to stop the mistreatment.
